Step 2: In this week’s class, we learned about the contents in a wikipedia. It includes title, table of contents, sections, subsections and much more we need to include for a wikipedia. Although it might seem to be a lot of information, it is necessary in order to convey detailed information for our audiences. The tone of the entry is also an important part of the entry, we must use a formal tone as we write, and we cannot use slang languages or the languages we would use when we speak to our friends or when we comment on things on Facebook. Also, no bad words. Another thing I learned is that how to choose our resources wisely. We should not use sources that are not written by an expert in the area, such as an Facebook article. We can use sources like published journals or articles, books or researches. And make sure the sources are reliable. Quote: “Victor Hugo's 19th century French historical novel Les Misérables found its way to the stage in 1980 as a remarkably successful musical, and finally the big screen in 1996 sans all of the singing” “Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper, in his wisdom, decided to have his actors sing live, and while none of them turn in career-ruining performances, there are more than a few examples of the stage musical's superiority” http://aarontveit.net/photos/displayimage.php?album=188&pid=4380#top_display_media
Quotes: “The world has a rich history of protest music that speaks for the poor and downtrodden” “During the three-month, $61 million production of Les Miz that wrapped this past June in the UK, the American public was already feeling the tension of a society dividing itself into percentages.” http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/les-miserables-20121221

One of the problem I have when I am using sources in my writings is that I am not good at putting them in my own words. So I would experiences issues like plagiarism, and not explaining my sources well enough. Which sometimes makes my readers misunderstand what I am trying to say and what I write seems to repeat and the main idea is not as clear. How I solve problems like this is that I would go back and read over my sources again, and try my best to understand them from a different perspective than the first time I read it, try to understand it, and then try to say the main ideas of my sources out loud in my own words. As if I am going to tell someone else what that source said. For problems with repeating, I would go back and read my essay again, and circle out where my ideas seems to repeat, and then I would try to replace it with something else, or delete it. A problem I also experienced, like Stedman discussed in his article, is the problem with citing my sources. I sometimes makes small mistakes of whether I should put a comma or period when I cite my source. When I am writing my Wikipedia entry, I would fix my problems by reading over my sources carefully before putting them in my own words. Also, I would reread my entry for a few times and fix the problems of repeating. I would also look at websites that teaches how to cite sources correctly when I am citing my sources. |
