Step 2: This week, we were introduced to our podcast project, in which we need to go out and observe a place and see what happens during a two hour period. I have never done projects like this before, and when I go out and observe at the Memorial Union of our school, I actually found a lot of interesting things that I can write about. Such as people that walked by, whether they are on their phone or talking to their friends, I wonder what they think about when they walk by. Also, I see people doing social experiments, and I am interested in what they are doing. And I learned that when writing a podcast project, we need to research on what we observed, and I plan to use the skills I learned when I was writing my Wikipedia project on researches, and use it on this project as well. Step 5: Source 1: https://cru.ucdavis.edu/memorialunion The memorial union of UC Davis is often called the living room of the UC Davis campus, and there are various kinds of activities students can do there during their free time. In memorial union, there are spaces like the coffee house, UC Davis store, games area, study lounges, and meeting rooms. Students can eat, study for their exams or buy stuff they need in memorial union. A lot of students like to spend their free time at the coffee house, where they can talk to other students, or just wait for their next class to begin. Also, clubs at UC Davis always do tabling in front of the coffee house, and when students walk past, they can promote their club and recruit new members. Quote: “The Memorial Union (MU) is the main student union at the University of California, Davis and is the center, both figuratively and literally, of the UC Davis campus.” “Often called the living room of campus, the Memorial Union is a central hub of student life.” Source 2: https://localwiki.org/davis/Memorial_Union In the beginning of Spring quarter 2015, the memorial union started its renewal project, that is planned to close most of its old offices there and relocate them during the construction. The study lounges will be expanded and the students will have more space to study and relax. Also, they will reopen the UC Davis store so the shop will become much bigger. They will also open a new home for the UC Davis Veterans Affairs Office at the memorial union. The campus are continuing to evolve to make the students’ life at campus better and provide them better studying opportunities. Quotes: “This comprehensive renovation will make the historic Memorial Union a more dynamic environment and integral on-campus destination for students and others in the UC Davis community.” “The MU was completed in 1955 and dedicated in honor of 128 UC Davis students and alumni who lost their lives in military service (called the "Gold Star Aggies") from World War I through World War II.” Step 9-13: Thesis: People interact with each other during their free time by using their cell phones, talking with each other and some of them just focus on their own business. Details: -people chatting -people laughing -people eat together -people eat by themselves -people look at their cell phones -people stand and talk with each other -people listen to music through their earphones -people avoided interaction -people interact with each other first Outline: -write about the place I chose -why I go there -what happens when I first arrive -what happened during the time I am there -what I noticed -relate to research question Step 14:
During this assignment, I chose the Memorial Union as a place for observation, because I think it is the place where I can see most of the people on campus, and I can see how people interact with each other during their free time, which is my research question. And a lot of fun things happened when I was doing my observation, such as I heard a few international students talking in Japanese, some people walk their dogs to school. I even saw someone doing a social experiment at the Memorial Union, where he said Hi to people that walks by and see if they respond. Which I found really interesting and kind of similar to what I am doing. Something that I wish I had known, and I know now, is that when I observe other people, I shouldn’t stare at them or let them notice that I am looking at them, otherwise they would think that I am not polite when I stare.
