Writing has never been my favorite subject in school, I thought it was boring and a waste of time. I hated it and every time I get a writing assignment, I would look at it right before the due date, and I would try to finish it with the shortest amount of time as possible. Even though I know the piece would not be as good, I always try to rush through it because I do not like writing that much. But last quarter, I started taking Workload 57, which is one of the hardest classes to pass. Therefore, I had to spend way more time on writing my essays and make several drafts before I submit my final work. During the process, I started to find writing interesting as I write more drafts, it is becoming more enjoyable for me to be able to put down all my ideas without consideration when I am writing my first draft. My writing slowly improved as I write more and more. When I start to take UWP 1 this quarter, the first assignment we got was the literacy narrative paper, where we discuss the process we became literacy in something of our interest. During the process of writing this papers, I advanced my skills in writing processes and writing for my audiences. photo by Mark Schenk In the living picture narrative project, we had to choose a topic that relates to our interest. When I first get the prompt, I dropped down ideas of what I usually do in my free time, such as listening to music and swimming, I wrote down almost anything I do when I am free, and then I choose one that I have the most interest in. And what I chose to write about is my traveling experiences and how I got obsessed with it over time. After I have decided on my topic, I start to make an outline of what I am gonna write in each paragraph. Then I would start my first draft, when I write my first draft, I would write down anything that comes to my mind, although I would make a lot of mistakes and I would repeat myself sometimes. But it is good for me when I write down all the things and make revisions later on, as it make sure that I do not miss anything points I want to include in my essay. When I use this method, it worked really well and it helps me improve my writing skills. Picture by Amy Lynn Hess Another skill that I improved in the process in writing this essay is writing to my audiences. I am getting to understand how I should write like I am speaking to my audiences. To make the audience better feel on what I want to say in my essay, the best way is to illustrate my examples well. So that when my audiences are reading the essay, they will be able to actually image and feel the same way I do as I described in my essay. For me, this is the most efficient way to express my feelings to my audiences. picture by http://www.printwand.com/ Doing the literacy narrative essay strengthens my writing skills and opened new doors for me to other writing strategies that will take my writings to another level. These are not the skills I would use only in UWP 1, they would be useful in all of my other writing classes as well. I hope I would be able to learn more skills and have the chance to use them in other classes as well to take my writings to a new level.
